CESD Participates in Minimum Wage Workshop in Yangon

In September 2015, the Myanmar government for the first time in history set a minimum wage at 3,600 MMK ($3 at that time of exchange rate) a day, lowest in ASEAN but slightly higher than Bangladesh. A year and a half after implementation, robust discussions continue between unions, worker representatives, businesses, and the government about the impacts and possible changes in the minimum wage level. On November 4th, CESD was invited by the Ministry of Labor, Population, and Immigration to arbitrate a workshop between worker representatives and government and policy-making figures seeking updates from workers, open a policy dialogue, and support future changes to the minimum wage.

CESD Helps Facilitate Myanmar Sustainable Aquaculture Programme Stakeholder Consultation

On Tuesday, 31st October the Centre for Economic and Social Development (CESD) was proud to attend the stakeholder consultation of the Myanmar Sustainable Aquaculture Programme (MYSAP) hosted by MoALI, the German International Cooperation (GIZ), Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation (MoALI), and European Union (EU). The Programme is a jointly implemented project between the Myanmar Department of Fisheries (DoF) and GIZ served with working with farmers, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Government and Non-Governmental Organizations, the private sector, academia and other stakeholder members of the aquaculture value chain to sustainably increase Myanmar’s aquaculture. The Programme is funded by the EU and German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

CESD Participates in Tripartite Workshop on Minimum Wages in Bago

Gracing an invitation extended by the Bago Regional Minister of Planning and Finance and Chair of the Regional Minimum Wage Committee, the Executive Director of the Centre for Economic and Social Development (CESD), Dr. Zaw Oo, along with a team of researchers participated in a Tripartite Workshop on Myanmar’s minimum wage held at Bago on 6th September 2017

CESD Participates in Mekong Forum 2017: New Geo-Economics: Reshaping the Future of the GMS?

On 14 July, Dr. Zaw Oo, Executive Director, CESD and Min Zar Ni Lin, Senior Technical and Policy Analyst, CESD spoke at the Mekong Forum 2017, an annual gathering of opinion leaders, international organizations and scholars that work towards shaping the development agenda in the Greater Mekong Subregion.

CESD Hosts Myanmar Aquaculture-Agriculture Survey: Results Dissemination Workshop

The Centre for Economic and Social Development (CESD) in Myanmar, Michigan State University, and International Food Policy Research Institute hosted a half-day seminar to present findings from the Myanmar Aquaculture-Agriculture Survey (MAAS) in Mindon room at Sedona Hotel in Yangon on June 30th, 2017.

Lowering Barriers to Finance is Key to Ensure Sustainable Agricultural Growth in Myanmar

In the past three years, Myanmar’s banking and finance sector has witnessed rapid growth, primarily aided by foreign direct investment inflows and economic liberalisation. Despite this growth, however, millions of farmers lack access to finance due to the absence of financial institutions and barriers to affordable lending in rural areas.

CESD Labour Team Presented Findings from Enterprise Survey and Causes and Consequences of Migration to Key Stakeholders

On the 5th of October, CESD Labour Team went to Ministry of Industry (MoI) in the afternoon to present findings from Enterprise Survey conducted in June 2015. Director General Daw Aye Aye Win from Ministry of Industry attended the presentation with three of her fellows and entered discussion with CESD Labour Team after the presentation.

CESD Labour Team Organised Survey Methodology Training at Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population

Regional Development Workshop in Mon State

The Mon State Hluttaw and CESD collaborated on, and conducted, a regional development workshop in the Mon Hluttaw Meeting Hall between 9th August and 10th August, 2016. The Mon Hluttaw Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Minister of Electricity, Members of Parliament,  officials and CESD researchers attended the workshop.
