CESD’s labour market research has been reported in Asia Research News 2016, a publication from ResearchSEA Limited. The article notes that a key challenge for labour reform in Myanmar is to balance improvements in wages and working conditions against industry’s need to retain a competitive edge.
The article quotes CESD Executive Director, Dr Zaw Oo, saying “We are trying to ensure workers and employers have a more constructive relationship and work with government to improve skills, productivity and management practices so that we are not bound to low-end manufacturing in the textile and garment sector, but can move up the value chain to more advanced production.”
The article reports on two Myanmar-based labour reform projects being funded by CESD’s partner organisation, the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada.
