Who are Myanmar’s potential labour migrants, which countries are they hoping to work in, and what are their motivations for working overseas? Myanmar’s Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security (MOLES) estimated that as much as 10 per cent of the Myanmar labour force is employed overseas (2012), yet little is known about the situation of migrant workers before they migrate.

MDRI-CESD and the International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s report into migrant worker attitudes and practices will help the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and support services to protect the rights of migrant workers.

The report, “Safe migration knowledge, attitudes and practices in Myanmar”, examines survey responses from 625 potential migrant workers at three target sites within Myanmar, and was released in January 2015.
