This background paper is part of the overall diagnostic review of agriculture and food security in Myanmar, undertaken by MDRI-CESD in partnership with the Michigan State University, on behalf of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
International experience and anecdotal evidence indicates that a lack of access to financial services, on a sustainable and affordable basis, is one of the major constraints in agriculture development.
The goal of this background paper is to outline constraints, major issues, and opportunities in rural finance within Myanmar, and to make preliminary recommendations towards a possible way forward.
